What Happens After the Wedding? Editing, Galleries & Delivery Explained

After your wedding day ends, a different part of the wedding photography process begins. Many couples wonder what happens next. As a wedding photographer in Surrey, one of the most common questions couples ask is how long it takes to receive their final wedding gallery. This blog explains how editing works, what photographers are doing behind the scenes, and when you can expect to receive your wedding photos.

Why Your Photos Aren’t Delivered Immediately

Wedding photography doesn’t end when the wedding ends. As you can imagine, a full wedding typically produces thousands of images, and each one needs to be reviewed carefully.

After the wedding your photographer goes through each photo individually to remove duplicates and test shots. There’s normally a lot of photos with people blinking which get removed too, as well as the ones on the more unflattering side.

This process ensures that only the best images are selected, and in the photography world is called ‘culling’.

The Editing Process Explained

Once the culling phase is complete, this is when the editing stage begins. Some people are put off when they hear the word editing, as they often worry the photos won’t be the ‘real’ them. Whilst some photographers might choose to edit their images heavily, I prefer to keep the photos as natural as possible to ensure they reflect the day accurately.

My typical editing process includes colour correction, exposure adjustments and ensuring the entire gallery feels consistent. Occasionally I’ll also convert certain images to black and white where it suits the moment.

How Long Wedding Photo Delivery Typically Takes

Delivery times vary, but most professional wedding photographers deliver galleries within 2–8 weeks

This depends on:

  • Wedding season workload

  • Number of images

  • Editing workflow

Quality editing takes time. While some photographers decide to use AI to edit their images, I prefer to make sure these are done individually by hand to ensure everything remains real and authentic.

How Your Wedding Photos Are Delivered

Most photographers deliver images through a private online gallery.

This allows you to view all images and download high resolution versions. You can also share these with family and friends and order prints if you wish to.

Why Careful Editing Makes a Huge Difference

Editing is where your wedding photos become a complete story. It ensures consistency and removes distractions while preserving the atmosphere of your day.

This is part of the preparation couples don’t see during the booking process.

Why Wedding Photography Continues Long After the Wedding Day

Most of the work happens after the wedding.

Selection, then editing, then delivery, which is why wedding photography is more than just showing up on the day.

It’s a complete process. One designed to preserve your memories properly.

Final Thoughts

If you don’t receive your full gallery straight away, this is completely normal. I always like to share a few sneak peek wedding photos within the first two or three days so couples have something to relive the day and share with family and friends.

However, the final gallery will usually be shared within 6 weeks. Whilst this can feel like a long wait, this is very common in the wedding industry. And nothing quite beats that feeling of sitting down a month or so after the wedding when you receive the final photos, and getting to re-live the day all over again!
